In an illustrious ceremony held on Saturday the 10th February 2024, in conjunction with the opening of Parliament, the annual Ubuntu Awards hosted in the CTICC in Cape Town brought together a diverse and esteemed assembly of attendees.

This prestigious event, celebrated for recognising outstanding contributions to South Africa's global presence and values, was attended by industry leaders, civil society advocates, members of the Cabinet, and the High commissioners accredited to South Africa. Orchestrated by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, the awards underscore the importance of honouring those who tirelessly work to elevate South Africa's national interests and values across the world.

This year's Ubuntu Awards highlighted the exceptional contributions of individuals and organisations in promoting South African values and interests globally. Among the honourees was Nelson Mandela University's Department of Emergency Medical Care (EMC), represented by Mr. Travis Trower, who accepted the prestigious Ubuntu Award on behalf of Rescue South Africa. This recognition not only underscores individual and collective achievements but also shines a spotlight on the robust partnership between Nelson Mandela University and Rescue South Africa. Anchored by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between NMU Department of Emergency Medical Care and Rescue South Africa, this alliance is pivotal in advancing search and rescue operations and disaster response initiatives, both domestically and internationally. These responses have been tested and as recently as 2023 and 2022, Nelson Mandela University alongside Rescue South Africa has attend to the disastrous flooding in KwaZulu Natal and Malawi and supported firefighting efforts in Gqeberha, saving lives and  infrastructure

Nelson Mandela University, serving as the epicentre for this critical training and outreach activities, boasts state-of-the-art equipment and a wealth of expertise in medical rescue supporting this critical role of supporting those in need and changing the world!
