FACULTY POSTGRADUATE STUDIES COMMITTEE 
 
The  Faculty of Health Sciences Research Directorate has two research committees, the Faculty Postgraduate Studies Committee (FPGSC)  and the Faculty Research and Engagement Committee (FREC). These committees have representatives from all our 11 department. Meetings are hosted monthly unless specified otherwise.
 
Composition: 
 
A Faculty Postgraduate Studies Committee (FPGSC) is established for each faculty.  The FPGSC consist of the following members: 
  • Executive Dean (Chairperson) 
  • Faculty Members: To be determined by the Faculty Board but should preferably provide for representation of the following groupings: Directors of Schools, Head of Departments and the person representing the faculty on the Postgraduate Studies Committee of the University. 
  • Member ex officio: Director Research Capacity Development 
  • Additional Members: Such other members as may be determined by the Committee from time to time. 
 
The Manager Faculty Administration nominated by the Executive Dean acts as a secretary to the Faculty Postgraduate Studies Committee. 
 
 
Functions:  
 
The Faculty Postgraduate Studies Committee –  
  • Gives strategic direction with reference to postgraduate studies in the Faculty;  
  • Ensures a conducive environment for postgraduate studies in the Faculty, in line with the strategic vision, mission and values of the University;  
  • Ensures the provision of high quality postgraduate education and training;  
  • Reviews, monitors and advises on postgraduate students’ recruitment and admissions;  
  • Considers examination reports for Masters treatises/dissertations and Doctoral theses;  
  • Develops and implements a faculty strategic plan for ensuring postgraduate student success;  
  • Considers and recommends matters that should be considered by the University PGSC;  
  • Considers matters referred to Faculties from the University PGSC;  
  • Monitors compliance with the Nelson Mandela University policies, procedures and rules for    postgraduate research degrees;  
  • Deliberates on any matter that, in the opinion of the Chairperson, should serve at the FPGSC.  

 


 
FACULTY RESEARCH AND ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE 
 
Composition: 
 
A Faculty Research and Engagement Committee is established for each faculty. The Faculty RE Committee consists of the following members:  
  • Faculty RE coordinator (Chairperson)  
  • Executive Dean  
  • Faculty Members: To be determined by the Faculty Board, but should preferably provide for representation of the following groupings: Directors of Schools, Head of Departments, Heads of research entities and the person representing the faculty on the Research Ethics Committee: Human / Animal  
  • Members ex officio: Director: Research Management, Director: Innovation Office, Director: Research Capacity Development and Director: Transformation Monitoring and Evaluation  
  • Additional Members: Such other members as may be determined by the Committee from time to time  
 
The Manager: Faculty Administration nominated by the Executive Dean acts as secretary to the Faculty RE Committee. 
 
 
Functions: 
 
The Faculty Research and Engagement Committee: 
  • Develops and implements a faculty Research and engagement vision and strategic plan in line with the institutional RE vision, mission and strategic objectives resulting in the creation of an environment that will encourage RTI activities.  
  • Monitors the quality, quantity and relevance of the faculty Research and engagement outputs.  
  • Monitors the development plans and activities of research entities which fall within the faculty.  
  • Monitors the work of the sub-committees, where formed.  
  • Submits reports and agenda items to the University Research and Engagement Committee.  
  • Screens and makes recommendations to the Research Committee on applications for research leave, research sabbatical, financial and other support.  
  • Determines a RE funding model for the faculty and develop policies and procedures for the allocation of Faculty RE Committee funding and other research resources. 
  • Where applicable, refers research proposals not tabled at the Higher Degrees Committee to the Research Ethics Committee: Human / Animal; and  
  • Monitors compliance with the Nelson Mandela University policies, procedures and rules for postgraduate research degrees.
